Welcome! I’m so glad you wandered this way!
My name is Elizabeth.
I didn’t grow up in Philly, but it’s been my home for nearly 20 years. It’s the place where I met my husband (who IS from Philly, born and raised). Stick around and you just might hear the story about how our relationship was initiated on a day when he came face-to-face with none other than Sylvester Stalone on the set of Rocky Balboa before making his way to my living room couch to proclaim, “I think you’re my wife.”
Philly is where I gestated, birthed and am now raising my four ornery kids. The three who are old enough to spell all learned
"E-A-G-L-E-S" before any other word, and the baby shouldn’t far behind. My eldest used to swear that the nursery rhyme song went “Ring around the Hoagie.” And I can get them to do almost anything if I bribe them with a TastyKake.
And Philly is the place where I get to have the BEST job in the world - supporting people through pregnancy, birth and early parenting as a birth educator and doula.
So beside my own family, there are two things that I know and love best - Philly and Birth. Hence, BABY Jawn.
So now you know a little about ME. But what is actually happening here? What IS BABYjawn.com?
First, let me tell you what this space IS NOT.
This is NOT a place for people who are pregnant, preparing for birth or endeavoring the adventure of parenting in Philly to get MORE INFORMATION.
I heard a brilliant talk recently by Dr Britta Bushnell in which she said, “If information alone were the only necessary key to a successful birthing and/or parenting journey, birthing and parenting would be wildly successful ALL. THE. TIME.”
We currently have SO MUCH information available to us as pregnant, birthing and parenting people. But what we often lack is connection. Support. Our Village. Friendly voices that help to normalize the hardest and weirdest parts of pregnancy, birth and parenting. Exposure to stories from real people doing the real work of growing, birthing and raising the next generation. Often what we need most is captured in the stories, in the real life experience of other people doing the same hardest, best work of life.
So this is a space where you will meet some people and hear some stories that I think will help you find more joy, confidence, satisfaction and connection. It’s a place for parents, parents-to-be and the birth workers who support them to rub shoulders and enjoy getting to know each other.
I’ll introduce you to some of my favorite people in Philly and let you hear their stories. And since last time I checked, Philly didn’t care if you like us or not, all of the video interviews and stories will be coming to you casual, authentic and unedited. We are not shiny Broadway production quality NYC or glamorous lights-camera-action LA. We are the entirely unpretentious City of Brotherly Love, so what we record is exactly what you’ll get.
Hang around, enjoy these stories and join in on the conversation.
